The search for real help, part 1

The first two weeks of April 2012 were extremely stressful on us and on our marriage.

April 1st, we went to see endo specialist #1.  I had my folder with all of my surgical reports and my IVF and FET information.   We got there on time and the doctor wasn’t even in the building.  He arrived a half hour later and then had to read my chart.  My sciatic pain was really bad that day, so, sitting hurt, walking hurt, it was just agonizing.  We finally went into the office for the consult.  All I can remember is that I was not very impressed.  He was very relaxed, maybe a little too relaxed for my taste, borderline unprofessional, in my opinion, but knowledgeable.  Maybe he was having a bad day?  He did try to have a conversation with us about other things.  He talked to my husband about his career and then it was time for the exam.  We would meet back in the office to talk afterwards.

I was in a very small exam room with an ultrasound machine, the walls could have used some spackle and paint.  He did the ultrasound after asking me questions about my pain and symptoms.  I don’t want to get too graphic, but I wasn’t expecting the rectal exam.  I almost screamed from that pain, I wanted to kick him,  I restrained myself, but oh my god that was horrific.

Back in the office, he proceeded to tell us I needed an extensive surgery, probably 8-10 hours at least.  IT would be an all day surgery and I would have to spend the night in the hospital.  Another teaching hospital, great.  He gave me a prescription for an MRI.  When I asked if I could go to the same place I had already had 2 MRI’s done, he said,”No, I have a relationship with this one and I prefer you go there.” Plus, I had to go see his GI doctor too, before any surgery would be booked.  That’s two more expenses.  Yes, I had insurance, but I wasn’t about to drive 2 hours away to have an MRI.  I was a irritated.  Of course, specialists are out of network anyway, so we spent a pretty large amount for the office visit and ultrasound, I think it was over $600.

Maybe the gyno oncologist will be helpful.  She’s only an hour and 15 minutes away and in network.
